January
We are moving right along in Fundations. As we start to work on the uppercase letters and letter formation and handwriting, we will also be introduing strategies for making words, writing words and decoding words. Along with our sight words, we will be learning how to read cvc (consonant-vowel-consonant) words, such as 'cat' or 'big'. These words are 'decodable' meaning that once your child has mastered all the letters and sounds, he/she should be able to figure out the words. Each week your child will bring home a list of words to practice building each day. This week, we sent home tagboard letters and a Fundations alphabet to keep at home. Simply dictate the given words to your child and have him/her 'build' the words. Your child is also learning how to 'tap out' words using either their fingers or arm. Each tap is for one SOUND. Every little bit of practice at home will help, but please, no pressure. HAVE FUN!

Fundations
from the Wilson Fundations website:
Wilson Fundations provides children of varying learning abilities with a
foundation for reading and spelling. It provides a structured, sequential, and
cumulative phonics/spelling program using multisensory teaching techniques.
Each level of Fundations presents skills in a carefully structured scope and
sequence. These build on previously taught skills and are brought forward
cumulatively: from unit to unit, year to year. Highlights of the program
include: skills that are taught explicitly and systematically, teacher modeling
with "Echo" the owl puppet directing students to repeat sounds, words, and
sentences, extensive practice providing multiple opportunities for skills
applications, and home support packets to encourage parental
involvement.
